Music in Barcelona: venues, festivals and a scene that runs all year
Barcelona punches well above its size musically: it hosts two of the world's most significant festivals, a concert hall that is a monument in its own right, and a density of small venues that keeps something playing every night of the week.
This guide covers the rooms by scale, the festivals by calendar, and the tickets you need to sort before you fly.
-
The Palau de la Música Catalana
A modernista concert hall where the building competes with whatever is on stage.
-
The historic venues
Apolo, Razzmatazz and the rooms that have shaped the city's nights for decades.
-
Primavera Sound: the season opener
The festival that opens the European summer season, at the Fòrum site in June.
-
Sónar: electronic music by day and night
Electronic music and digital creativity, by day on Montjuïc and by night at the Fòrum.
-
The Grec Festival
Summer theatre, dance and music, centred on an open-air Greek theatre on Montjuïc.
-
Jazz
Serious clubs, a major November festival and a tradition going back decades.
-
Live music in the neighbourhoods
Bars with bands, free sessions and the scene that plays to locals every night.
-
Opera and the Liceu
The Gran Teatre del Liceu on the Rambla, one of the great opera houses of Europe.
Frequently asked questions
Which festival should I build a trip around?
Primavera Sound for indie, hip-hop and a big international line-up, Sónar for electronic music, and the Grec Festival if you would rather sit in a stone amphitheatre in July.
Can I get tickets on the day?
For the clubs and small venues, usually yes. For the Palau, the Liceu and anything during Primavera or Sónar, book in advance, and for the festivals book as early as you can.
Is there live music all year round?
Yes. The venue calendar runs continuously, and the festival season stretches from Primavera in late May through the Jazz Festival in November and December.
What should I see if I only have one night?
A concert at the Palau de la Música. The building is extraordinary, tickets are often available on the day, and it is the most Barcelona-specific music experience on offer.
